AER001 – Emergency Relief Flight Report
Route: Kipnuk (PFKI) → Bethel (PABE)
Aircraft: Beechcraft King Air C90B
Time: 08:00 – 08:41 AKDT (Alaska Daylight Time UTC – 8)
After a long night of coordination, our first AER25 relief mission finally lifted off from Kipnuk, one of the coastal communities hit hardest by the remnants of Typhoon Halong.
I took off from PFKI at 08:00 carrying medical staff, emergency supplies, and two injured residents needing transfer to the regional hospital in Bethel.
The airstrip at Kipnuk showed clear signs of flooding, the kind of field where every takeoff feels like rolling dice!
Once airborne, the view revealed the storm’s trail: scattered debris, flooded tundra, and faint traces of the shoreline nearly erased by the surge.
Approach into Bethel was calm by comparison, though the tower reported high traffic from multiple rescue and supply flights.
At 08:41 local time, engines shut down, an Alaskan Winds aircraft completing a sortie in the Halong Relief Operations.
Every pound of cargo today meant a few more hours of heat, light, or hope somewhere out there in the Delta.
And this was only the beginning!

Greetings Eagles!
Assignment came up last minute, a simple hop to put a little extra cash into the company books
Piper Super Cub PA-18, just me and one passenger, light bags. Couldn’t ask for a better excuse to stretch the Cub’s legs.
We pushed off from CKU Cordova Municipal at 1834 local, the light starting to paint the Sound in gold.
Passenger was a local fisherman heading over to Valdez, talkative on the ramp but quickly settled once the little Cub lifted off.
En route, I made a planned stop at PAKA Tatitlek; short quiet strip, over Prince William Sound.
Passenger stretched his legs while I topped fuel and checked the Cub over. Everything looked good, so we were rolling again in no time!
The short hop across the water toward PAVD Valdez was pure magic - I always loved this area and the approach to Valdez!
The mountains to the north rising steep, water like glass - pure late-day Alaska.
Dropped into Valdez smooth, tied her down, and handed over one satisfied passenger who already had friends waiting at the ramp.
A small job, but money in the log for the company and another evening in Alaska that I’ll remember long after the ink dries.
